Important information about flying drones commercially in the capital.

Can you fly a drone over central London?

Yes, but it is heavily restricted. Much of Central London (EGR312) is restricted airspace, and large areas are covered by airport Flight Restriction Zones (FRZs). However, our commercial drone pilots can legally operate by submitting non-standard flight requests to NATS and the Metropolitan Police, and by holding a CAA Operational Authorisation (PDRA01) which allows flying closer to buildings and people.

How much does a drone survey cost in London?

Due to the complexity of the airspace and the specific licenses required, London surveys generally command a slight premium over other regions. A standard residential visual inspection might start around £200 - £300. Larger commercial surveys, thermal imaging, or jobs requiring complex ATC clearances will range from £400 to £800+.

Do I need to notify my local London Borough Council?

You do not need council permission to fly *over* your property, as the CAA controls the airspace. However, if the drone pilot needs to take off or land (TOL) from council-owned land, parks, or public highways, council permission may be required. Your chosen drone pilot will handle all risk assessments and advise if they can take off from your private property instead.

Can you fly near Heathrow or London City Airport?

Yes. It is illegal to fly inside an airport's Flight Restriction Zone (FRZ) without explicit permission. However, our commercial drone pilots regularly liaise with Air Traffic Control (ATC) at London airports to safely unlock the airspace and conduct commercial surveys within these zones. This process may add a few days to the project lead time.
