Credential-Checked Coastal Monitoring

Drone Coastal & Erosion Surveys.

Compare quotes from specialist UK drone operators for repeatable, tide-aware coastal surveys — cliff retreat, dune profiling, and flood-defence inspection, delivered as survey-grade orthomosaics and change-detection DTMs.

Cliff retreat won't wait for a boat survey.

Coastal engineers, local authorities, and estates managers need timely, repeatable elevation data. Traditional walk-over and vessel surveys simply can't deliver at the cadence erosion demands.

Unsafe Cliff-Face Access

Rope-access assessments on unstable cliffs are slow, weather-dependent, and genuinely dangerous. A drone surveys the same face from standoff in a single session, with no personnel near the edge.

Erosion Data Going Stale

National LIDAR composites are refreshed on multi-year cycles. In high-retreat locations that's far too slow to inform planning, insurance, or managed-realignment decisions. Drone flights give you year-on-year — or monthly — deltas.

Flood Defence Inspection Costs

Inspecting groynes, revetments, and sea walls at low water on foot consumes days of tide windows. A drone captures the entire defence length and crest line in one flight, with centimetre-accurate measurements on the orthomosaic.

Coastal flying is a tide window, not a calendar day.

A useful cliff or dune survey has to be flown at the right tide state, in the right light, and inside the right MCA and CAA clearances. Miss any of those and your dataset is worthless for change-detection against next year's flight.

Every coastal survey on this network is flown by drone operators who plan around LAT/HAT tide data, coordinate with HM Coastguard when appropriate, and lock ground control points so every subsequent flight can be rigorously compared.

The result is a dataset that stands up under planning, insurance, and Environment Agency scrutiny — and still matches to the millimetre when you fly it again next spring.

Deliverables your coastal engineer can actually use.

Our network operators deliver survey-grade outputs ready for coastal engineers, planners, and Environment Agency submissions.

Change-Detection DTMs

Compare this flight's digital terrain model against your baseline to visualise volume lost, dune migration, or crest-line retreat. Colour-coded deltas export straight to GIS for council, insurer, or consultant review.

Tide-Aware Orthomosaics

Every flight is planned against LAT/HAT data so your orthomosaic is comparable to the last one. Geo-referenced, centimetre-accurate, and ready to measure scarp, toe, and defence crest positions against historic imagery.

Annotated Cliff & Dune Reports

Each slump, scarp, blow-out, or undercut is pinned, numbered, and cross-referenced to the source imagery — giving your coastal engineer a defensible, dated record to feed into retreat modelling.

Book your coastal survey in 3 steps.

Submit one brief. We aim to review it within one working day, then introduce relevant independent specialists who can assess the project.

01

Describe the Site

Tell us the stretch of coast, the feature type (cliff, dune, defence, harbour), and what you need to evidence. Takes under two minutes.

02

Compare Specialists

We review the brief against relevant verified profiles and current availability. If listed supply is limited, we will say so and source availability manually. Any pilot introduced must confirm equipment, permissions, timing and deliverables for the actual job.

03

Survey & Report

Your drone pilot files the airspace permissions, flies the coastline at the right tide state, and delivers an orthomosaic, DTM, and annotated change-detection report.

Coastal Survey FAQ

Technical questions on tide planning, airspace, and deliverables.

How do tides affect survey accuracy and scheduling?
Every coastal survey on the network is planned against LAT/HAT tide data so the wet/dry line, toe-of-cliff, and defence crests are captured at a comparable state between flights. Without tide-aware timing, your change-detection is contaminated by water level alone — not genuine erosion.
Can you deliver year-on-year erosion comparisons?
Yes — drone operators place and record permanent ground control points on the first flight so every subsequent survey co-registers to the same datum. The delivered change-detection raster highlights volume lost, scarp retreat, and accretion zones, and exports to QGIS or ArcGIS for coastal-modelling input.
Do you fly over water and coordinate with the MCA?
Network operators hold the CAA authorisations needed to fly near the coast and, where appropriate, submit NOTAM or maritime notices. HM Coastguard is notified for any flight with significant over-water exposure, and drone pilots use tethered or spotter-supported operations in busy harbour or SAR airspace.
Photogrammetry or LiDAR for cliff surveys?
Photogrammetry is usually the right tool for bare cliff and dune surfaces — it gives you colour-rich orthomosaics and sub-5 cm point clouds at a fraction of the cost of drone LiDAR. For heavily vegetated cliff tops or machair, where the ground is hidden under marram or gorse, a LiDAR payload earns its keep. Our drone operators will recommend the right approach in the quote.
