NR-Approved Rail Corridor Surveys

Drone Railway & Corridor Surveys.

No verified pilot profile currently lists this exact service. Submit a brief and we will review and source current availability manually.

Compare quotes from Network Rail-approved UK drone operators for track, embankment, vegetation, and OLE inspections — with no possessions, no line blockages, and no white-period disruption.

Booking a possession just to look at an embankment is madness.

P-Way engineers, OLE teams, and civils contractors burn shifts on T3 possessions when a possession-free drone flight would do. Drones rewrite the economics of rail corridor inspection.

Possession & Isolation Costs

A single T3 possession with COSS, lookouts, and delay attributions can cost tens of thousands. A possession-free drone flight from outside the DCP captures the same corridor detail in a single daytime shift.

Earthworks & Veg Risk

Washouts, slippages, and encroaching vegetation cause a large share of delay minutes. Drone photogrammetry produces dated corridor models so you can monitor slope movement and canopy creep between CP reviews.

Lineside Worker Exposure

Sending staff trackside for visual inspections means PTS, briefings, and residual risk from passing traffic. A drone keeps drone operators in the safe cess or beyond the fence line entirely.

Rail corridor flying is not for hobbyists.

Flying near OLE, signalling equipment, and live running lines demands PTS-grade planning, NR Asset Protection engagement, and possession-free procedures. That is not an A2 CofC weekend job.

Every rail survey on this network is delivered by drone operators with Network Rail Sentinel competences, PTS where required, and a CAA Operational Authorisation tailored to lineside work. They carry £5M+ public liability as standard.

The result is corridor data accepted by NR Asset Protection, ORR, and your delivery sponsor without rework.

NR-Approved & PTS Qualified

Sentinel & £5M Public Liability

Deliverables your P-Way and OLE teams can use.

Our network operators produce outputs ready for NR Asset Protection, BIM coordinators, and routine CP reviews.

3D Corridor Models

Photogrammetric meshes of the track corridor, embankments, and lineside structures. Import into ProjectWise, Revit, or NR's GIS to measure clearances, cant, and cess levels without returning to site.

Vegetation Encroachment Maps

Canopy height, lean, and encroachment into the GRIP zone, tagged to mileposts. Ideal for targeting veg clearance priorities without sending a walk-out crew down a cess in the dark.

OLE Condition Imagery

Close-range close-visual inspection (CVI) imagery of registration arms, droppers, insulators, and contact wire, captured while the line is open to traffic and the equipment is energised.

Book your railway survey in 3 steps.

Submit one brief. We aim to review it within one working day, then introduce relevant independent specialists who can assess the project.

01

Describe the Asset

Tell us the ELR & mileage, asset type, and what you need documented. Takes under two minutes.

02

Compare Specialists

We review the brief against relevant verified profiles and current availability. If listed supply is limited, we will say so and source availability manually. Any pilot introduced must confirm equipment, permissions, timing and deliverables for the actual job.

03

Fly & Report

Your drone pilot submits the NR Form A, flies the corridor possession-free, and delivers a packaged report with 3D models, veg maps, and raw imagery.

Railway Survey FAQ

Technical questions on NR approval, possession-free rules, and deliverables.

Are your drone operators Network Rail approved?
Not by default. Railway work may require Network Rail Asset Protection engagement, Sentinel or PTS competence and project-specific documentation depending on the location and operating plan. Ask any proposed pilot to evidence the current requirements for your job before engagement.
What are the rules for possession-free flying?
Drone pilots must stay outside the Demarcation of Control Point (DCP), maintain VLOS with the asset, and hold agreement from NR Asset Protection. The drone is not permitted to overfly the running edge unless under a possession or specific NR dispensation. Our drone operators plan cess-side launches that stay compliant end to end.
What weather conditions prevent a rail survey?
Commercial drones fly safely in winds up to roughly 24 mph and light drizzle, but heavy rain, low cloud below the OLE, or gusts above manufacturer limits will ground a flight. Drone operators monitor METAR and reschedule at no cost if the window closes.
Do I get raw imagery as well as the report?
Yes. Every brief includes the 3D corridor model, the vegetation encroachment layer, and the raw image set (typically several hundred 50MP+ photos plus video clips of OLE runs). Files are delivered via secure cloud link within 3–7 working days depending on job size.
