DJI Mini 5 Pro vs DJI Flip: which one should you buy?
Both of these sit a hair under 250 grams and both fold. One has the biggest sensor DJI has fitted to a drone this size; the other has a cage round its propellers and takes off from your open hand.

DJI Flip
The 2025 folding palm-launcher
The friendlier drone by a distance. Caged propellers, palm launch, and a camera that is very good rather than exceptional.

What each of these is actually for
The Mini 5 Pro is the most capable small drone DJI sells. It folds out, takes a controller, and is built around a one-inch camera sensor.
The Flip does something the Mini 5 Pro cannot. It launches off your open palm with no controller and no phone, films a preset move and comes back to your hand.
The Flip also cages all four propellers, so a clipped branch is usually a bump rather than a repair bill.
So this is a capability comparison in one direction and a usability comparison in the other, which is why both answers are defensible.

Four things that do not separate them
Put these aside first.

So ignore all 4
None of it can tell you which to buy. The next four things can.
Both quoted flight times are laboratory figures. Neither survives a breezy afternoon at the stated number.
The four differences that actually matter
1. A one-inch sensor against a 1/1.3-inch one
Sensor size decides more about how footage looks than any other specification, and the Mini 5 Pro has the larger one by a clear margin.
It uses a one-inch sensor at 50 megapixels. The Flip uses a 1/1.3-inch sensor at 48.
The megapixel counts look close, which is misleading. The physical area is what matters, and the one-inch sensor has substantially more of it.

More area means cleaner footage as the light drops, and more room to crop or colour-grade before the picture falls apart.
The Flip has a very slightly wider lens, at f/1.7 against f/1.8, which is the one line here it wins. It does not offset the sensor difference.
Frame rate goes to the Mini 5 Pro as well, at 4K up to 120 frames a second against the Flip’s 100.
Winner — DJI Mini 5 Pro
A physically larger sensor with more frame-rate headroom. The Flip is a genuinely good camera drone; the Mini 5 Pro is a better one, and in poor light the gap widens rather than narrows.
In bright, still conditions you would struggle to tell the two apart on a phone screen.

Two capabilities rather than one, and the Mini 5 Pro has neither at any price.
The Flip keeps all four propellers inside a plastic cage, which makes it safe to catch out of the air and forgiving of a clipped doorframe.
It also has palm control. Press a button, hold your hand flat, and it lifts off, films a move you chose and returns to your hand.

These are different philosophies. The Mini 5 Pro avoids the collision; the Flip survives it and lets you skip the controller entirely.
Indoors, around people, or when you want to be in your own footage, the Flip does things no amount of sensing on the Mini 5 Pro can replace.
Winner — DJI Flip
A cage works in the dark and on thin branches, where sensing systems struggle, and palm launch means being in your own shots without propping a phone on a fence post. Neither is something the Mini 5 Pro can do.
Fly in open space with a controller and you will never use either, at which point you have paid for capability you do not need.

Both have real obstacle sensing, so this is about coverage.
The Flip carries forward-facing 3D infrared, plus a visual sensor and infrared underneath. It sees what is ahead and slows for it.
The Mini 5 Pro has omnidirectional binocular vision, which is paired cameras judging depth in every direction, and adds forward LiDAR on top of that.

The gap shows in orbits, which take the drone crabbing sideways around you. On the Flip nothing watches that direction.
It also shows in wind. The Mini 5 Pro is rated to 12 metres per second against the Flip’s 10.7, which is roughly 27 miles an hour against 24.
Winner — DJI Mini 5 Pro
Binocular vision on every side with LiDAR layered on, and a higher wind rating to go with it. For the orbit and follow shots people buy these drones for, the Mini 5 Pro is watching the direction it is travelling.
The Flip has enough sensing for open ground, and its cage covers the cases where sensing would have failed anyway.

A small-sounding difference that changes what you have to buy alongside the drone.
The Flip has 2 GB of internal storage. At 4K and 100 frames a second that is a matter of seconds of footage.

So a microSD card is part of the purchase price on the Flip rather than an accessory. Without one it cannot do its job.
The Mini 5 Pro has 42 GB, which is genuinely enough to fly a full day and never think about a card.
Flight time follows the same direction, at 36 minutes against 31 on the standard batteries. The Mini 5 Pro’s 52-minute figure belongs to the Plus battery, which is the heavier C1 model at 355 grams.
Winner — DJI Mini 5 Pro
Twenty-one times the onboard storage and five more minutes in the air. Neither is dramatic on its own, but together they mean the Mini 5 Pro needs nothing else bought before it is useful.
A memory card is not expensive, and once fitted the storage difference stops mattering entirely.

Two catches worth knowing before you order either one
Neither is a reason to avoid either drone. Both are things I would want to have been told before paying.
The Mini 5 Pro’s headline numbers belong to a heavier drone
Two of the Mini 5 Pro’s best figures come from the Plus battery, and that configuration is the C1 model at 355 grams.
The 52-minute flight time is one. The 19 metres per second top speed is the other.
Neither applies to the 249.9 gram drone this comparison is about, which is rated at 36 minutes.
DJI also states a tolerance of four grams either way on that 249.9 figure, so the margin under the limit is nominal rather than real.
The Flip needs a memory card from the first flight
Two gigabytes is not storage in any meaningful sense at 4K.
Budget for a microSD card as part of buying the Flip, not as something to sort out later.
The Mini 5 Pro has 42 GB inside and does not need one at all.
Weight, transmission and ceiling
Three points worth having straight before you choose.
Weight is closer than it looks. The Flip is under 249 grams and the Mini 5 Pro is 249.9, so neither has usable headroom below the 250 gram line.
The Mini 5 Pro’s figure carries a stated tolerance of four grams either way, which means an individual drone could sit above the line even though the declared class figure does not.
Transmission goes to the Mini 5 Pro, which uses O4+ against the Flip’s O4. Both quote 20 km, which is far beyond anything UK visual line of sight rules allow anyway.
Ceiling favours the Mini 5 Pro at 6000 metres against 3000, and neither figure matters here, where you are held to 120 metres.

Both drones need a Flyer ID and an Operator ID. Neither is exempt
You will read all over the internet that drones under 250 grams need no licence. For a camera drone in the UK that is simply wrong, and both of these are camera drones.
Any camera drone between 100 g and 250 g needs both of these before you fly it outdoors. At 249.9 g and under 249 g, both sit in that bracket very narrowly indeed.
Flyer ID
Proves you know the rules. A free online theory test, valid five years.
Operator ID
Registers you as responsible for the drone. £12.34 a year, and the number must be labelled on the drone.
Neither needs a GVC or an A2 Certificate of Competence for ordinary recreational flying. Both are C0 class marked, though the Mini 5 Pro is also sold as a C1 model at 355 g. There is more in do I need a licence for a sub-250g drone and UK class marking explained.
Why I pick the DJI Mini 5 Pro over the DJI Flip
On capability the Mini 5 Pro wins comfortably. Bigger sensor, better sensing, more storage, longer flights and a higher wind rating.
On usability the Flip wins just as clearly, because it flies off your hand and survives contact, and no specification on the Mini 5 Pro replaces either.
Buy the Mini 5 Pro if you are making footage. Buy the Flip if you want to be in it.

I recommend the DJI Mini 5 Pro over the DJI Flip because a one-inch sensor is simply a bigger camera than a 1/1.3-inch one, and the Mini 5 Pro sees on every side rather than only forwards. It also holds 42 GB against the Flip’s 2 GB, which ends the memory card question. The Flip answers with caged propellers and palm launch, and those are real advantages the Mini 5 Pro cannot match. But on what the drone can actually do, this is not close.

The forgiving option
DJI Flip
Buy this instead if palm launch and caged propellers matter more than sensor size. It is the drone you can hand to anybody, and the one you are more likely to have with you.
