DJI Mini 5 Pro vs DJI Mini 4K: which one should you buy?
These are the two ends of the same class. One has a one-inch sensor, sees in every direction and holds 42 gigabytes of footage. The other cannot detect a fence post and has no storage at all.

The best and the cheapest sub-250 gram drones DJI sells, side by side. A one-inch sensor against a 1/2.3-inch one is not a comparison so much as a demonstration.

DJI Mini 4K
The 2024 budget folder
The cheapest way into a folding DJI drone. It flies, it holds a level horizon, and it does very little else.

Why this comparison is worth making anyway
On specifications this is lopsided, and I will not pretend otherwise. But it is a comparison people genuinely make, because both drones sit under 250 grams and both fold.
That shared bracket is what puts them on the same shortlist. It also makes the gap between them a useful illustration of what the money actually buys.
The Mini 4K is the cheapest folding DJI drone. The Mini 5 Pro is the most capable drone DJI has ever fitted under 250 grams.
Both appear in my best drones under 250g guide, at opposite ends of it.
Three things that do not separate them
A very short list, which is the point.

Same three-axis gimbal
Tilt, roll and pan on both.

Same UK paperwork
Flyer ID and Operator ID for both.

Both fold
And both need a controller and a phone.

So ignore all 3
And that is all. Everything below is one-sided.
Both fly on bare propellers, so neither forgives contact the way a caged drone does. On the Mini 4K that matters more, because it cannot see the obstacle coming either.
The four differences that actually matter
1. A one-inch sensor against a 1/2.3-inch one
Sensor size decides more about how footage looks than anything else, and this is the widest gap in the sub-250 gram class.
The Mini 5 Pro uses a one-inch sensor at 50 megapixels. The Mini 4K uses a 1/2.3-inch sensor at 12.

A one-inch sensor has several times the light-gathering area of a 1/2.3-inch one. In practice that is the difference between footage that survives a grey afternoon and footage that does not.
The lens compounds it, at f/1.8 against f/2.8, and so does sensitivity, at ISO 6400 against 3200.
Frame rate finishes it. The Mini 5 Pro shoots 4K at up to 120 frames a second; the Mini 4K caps at 30, which is normal speed only.
Winner — DJI Mini 5 Pro
Several times the sensor area, four times the stills resolution, twice the ISO headroom and slow motion the Mini 4K cannot produce. There is no line here the Mini 4K wins.
In bright, still light on a phone screen, the Mini 4K produces perfectly watchable 4K. It is everything beyond that where it falls away.

The Mini 4K manual states it plainly on page 13: the drone cannot sense obstacles on its route automatically, and the pilot should stay alert and steer around them.
Its only sensors point at the ground, to help it hover and land.
The Mini 5 Pro has omnidirectional binocular vision, which is paired cameras judging depth in every direction, plus a forward-facing LiDAR unit and infrared underneath.

Both fly on bare propellers, which makes the Mini 4K’s blindness more expensive. It cannot see the branch and there is no cage when it arrives.
The Mini 5 Pro is also rated to more wind, at 12 metres per second against 10.7, which is roughly 27 miles an hour against 24.
Winner — DJI Mini 5 Pro
The most complete sensing package in the class against none at all. For a first drone in particular this gap is worth more than any camera specification on the page.
Fly the Mini 4K over an empty field with nothing but sky around it and the missing sensors never come up.

A difference that changes what you have to buy before the drone is usable.
The Mini 4K has no internal storage whatsoever. A microSD card is not an accessory but a requirement, from the first flight.

The Mini 5 Pro has 42 GB built in, which is genuinely enough to fly a full day and never think about a card at all.
Transmission runs the same way. The Mini 5 Pro uses O4+ where the Mini 4K uses OcuSync 2.0 and pipes a 720p live view to your phone.
You still record 4K on the Mini 4K. It is the picture you compose the shot on that is soft, which matters more than it sounds when you are judging a frame.
Winner — DJI Mini 5 Pro
Forty-two gigabytes and a sharp live view against no storage and a 720p feed. The Mini 5 Pro needs nothing else bought before it is useful.
A memory card is cheap, and once it is fitted the storage difference stops mattering.

The one place the cheap drone genuinely wins, and it is worth taking seriously.
The Mini 4K is 246 grams, giving four grams of margin under the UK limit. The Mini 5 Pro is 249.9, giving a tenth of a gram.

DJI’s own specification page also states that the Mini 5 Pro’s actual weight is approximately 249.9 grams, plus or minus four grams.
At the top of that band a Mini 5 Pro would weigh nearly 254 grams, which is over the line the sub-250 gram claim depends on.
The declared class figure is 249.9 grams and the rules work from that. But if you want certainty rather than a declaration, put the drone on scales with its battery, propellers and card fitted.

Four grams of real margin against a tenth of a gram and a stated tolerance. Neither is generous, but only one of them could plausibly weigh more than 250 grams on the day.
The Mini 4K has no class mark at all, which is worse documentation even if the practical UK rules under 250 grams are the same.

Mini 4KThe Mini 5 Pro wins three of four decisively, so this comes down to budget. If the Mini 4K is where you have to land, the Neo 2 and the Flip both cost less than the Mini 5 Pro and both can at least see something.
Two catches worth knowing before you order either one
Neither is a reason to avoid either drone. Both are things I would want to have been told before paying.
The Mini 5 Pro’s best numbers belong to a heavier drone
Two of the Mini 5 Pro’s headline figures come from the Plus battery, and that configuration is the C1 model at 355 grams.
The 52-minute flight time is one. The 19 metres per second top speed is the other.
Neither applies to the 249.9 gram drone in this comparison, which is rated at 36 minutes.
That is still five minutes more than the Mini 4K, so the Mini 5 Pro wins on endurance either way. It just does not win by as much as the marketing implies.
The Mini 4K needs a card and a charged phone before it flies
No internal storage means a microSD card is part of the purchase price rather than an optional extra.
Its controller has no screen of its own either. Your phone clamps in and becomes the display, so a flat phone is a cancelled flight.
The Mini 5 Pro has 42 GB inside and needs neither, though it still uses your phone or a screen controller to fly.
Flight time, ceiling and size
Three specifications where the gap is narrower than the rest of this page.
Flight time is the closest of the lot. The Mini 5 Pro is rated at 36 minutes on its standard battery against the Mini 4K’s 31.
Five minutes is real but modest, and both fall a long way short of the quoted figures once there is wind to push against.
Ceiling favours the Mini 5 Pro heavily, at 6000 metres against 4000, and neither number matters in the UK where you are held to 120 metres.
The Mini 4K is the smaller package folded, at 138 by 81 by 58 millimetres against 157 by 95 by 68. It is the one physical advantage it holds.

Both drones need a Flyer ID and an Operator ID. Neither is exempt
You will read all over the internet that drones under 250 grams need no licence. For a camera drone in the UK that is simply wrong, and both of these are camera drones.
Any camera drone between 100 g and 250 g needs both of these before you fly it outdoors. At 249.9 g and 246 g, both sit in that bracket.
Flyer ID
Proves you know the rules. A free online theory test, valid five years.
Operator ID
Registers you as responsible for the drone. £12.34 a year, and the number must be labelled on the drone.
Neither needs a GVC or an A2 Certificate of Competence for ordinary recreational flying. The Mini 5 Pro is C0 class marked in standard form and also sold as a C1 model at 355 g; the Mini 4K carries no class mark at all. Why I pick the DJI Mini 5 Pro over the DJI Mini 4K
This is the widest gap in the sub-250 gram class, and every difference except weight margin runs one way.
Four times the sensor area, the most complete sensing package DJI fits under 250 grams, slow motion, a sharp live view and 42 GB of storage.
The Mini 4K answers with a much lower price and four grams of genuine weight margin. If the budget decides it, fly it somewhere with nothing to hit.

I recommend the DJI Mini 5 Pro over the DJI Mini 4K because these are the top and the bottom of the same class and every meaningful specification separates them. Four times the sensor area, sensing in every direction, proper slow motion and 42 GB of onboard storage. The Mini 4K is a great deal cheaper, and that is its entire argument. If the budget stretches, nothing here is a close call.
